In-car training!

Training to be a Driving Instructor requires dedication, and there are no shortcuts!

Three qualifying tests to pass, each of which provides the skills and knowledge for the next. Sadly, just like our learner drivers, not enough study time seems to be dedicated to passing the first stage! The Theory and Hazard Perception Test (Part 1).

There are no restrictions on the number of attempts taken at this first hurdle, and the theory is a multiple-choice test. Sadly, many simply try and try again until they pass but fail to put enough study into their preparation. Worse still, once passed, they put the books away to gather dust and never revisit them!

The test of driving ability (Part 2) is the next hurdle on the road to the finish line. Three attempts are permitted at this; they are not cheap, so a first-time pass is very beneficial to the pocket! Experience has shown that those who fail do so because they did not follow the correct road procedure or perhaps did not adhere to the Highway Code. Knowledge which should have been firmly in place as a result of their theory and hazard studies!

Finally, the finishing line is clearly in sight with just the test of instructional ability (Part 3) to negotiate! For many, the biggest hurdle of all is that, again, only three attempts are permitted, and it is quite costly!

This is an area that many PDI’s fall into the trap of taking shortcuts!

There are countless products out there, all aimed at enticing the potential driving instructor to part with their hard-earned cash. Lesson planners, compact discs, DVDs of briefings and Q and A examples- the list is endless. A massive market, with good and bad, and they do have their uses. Videos available demonstrating the pre-set tests are all good stuff, but nothing I have mentioned on its own can deliver the required pass!

In-car training is not cheap but is absolutely essential in passing part 3.

Everything you read, listen to or watch needs to be delivered in-car. In a dynamic, ever-changing environment, the instructor needs to teach and develop their pupils' driving skills. They need to cope with these conditions, have strong observational skills, effective instructional techniques, and mental agility to keep the car and everyone around it safe. This cannot be achieved without high-quality in-car training, followed by in-car practice.

My advice to anyone reading this article who wants to be a good driving instructor and qualify with ease!

Spend your money wisely on good-quality in-car training and don’t be one of those who take shortcuts and spend fortunes!

Till the next time.
