Time to hit the road and improve your driving skills. I know you probably think you drive to a very high standard, but the truth is we all develop bad habits. With no one looking over our shoulders when we go (except the other half), we will do things wrong without realising it. Over time this becomes our typical driving style, and we all think we are the best drivers in the world.

When out in your driving school car, the general public gets to see how you drive on the roads. Some will be the mums, dads, uncles and aunts of potential pupils, and poor driving will lead to a bad reputation and the loss of potential business. Your clients will hopefully look up to you as a role model for how they should drive, so you need to move to the standard you will teach.

Chris is a DVSA registered fleet driver trainer and has sat and passed the RoSPA advanced driving test, achieving a GOLD grade. He is well qualified to get your driving back on track and to the required standard. You cannot book the part 2 test until you have passed the part 1 theory test. Unlike the part 1 theory test, you are only allowed three attempts at the part 2 Driving ability test. Hence, you must make sure you are ready to get professional help and advice before sitting. Chris Deane ADI offers you an individualised part 2 training course to meet your training needs. Which will include an initial 2-hour assessment of your driving ability, followed by a personal recommendation of how much training you will need to reach part 2 standard of driving.

The part 2 driving ability test is 1 hour long and includes:

  • an eyesight test
  • vehicle safety questions (show me tell me)
  • an examination of your driving ability

The eyesight test

You must read a number plate from a distance of 26.5 metres for vehicles with the new style plates (starting with two letters followed by two numbers) or 27.5 metres for the old style. We recommend you check your eyesight before beginning in-car training and obtain glasses or contact lenses if required. These must be worn throughout the test if needed to read the number plate.

 Vehicle safety questions

You will need to answer five questions on vehicle safety. It consists of two show me questions on the move, and three tell me. For the three tell me questions, you must explain how you should carry out particular safety checks at the test centre. The show me questions will be asked on the move when the examiner considers it safe to do so. The examiner will record a driving fault for each incorrect answer or action. If you get all five wrong, you will automatically fail the test of driving ability.

 Driving ability

You will drive in different road and traffic conditions to a high standard during the test. During the test, you will expect to demonstrate the following:

  • expert handling of the controls
  • use of correct road procedure
  • the anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
  • sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
  • consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
  • driving in an environmentally friendly manner

You must demonstrate your ability to perform any of the following manoeuvres:

  • move away straight ahead or at an angle
  • overtake, meet or cross the path of other vehicles
  • turn left-hand and right-hand corners
  • stop the car as if you’re in an emergency
  • driving forward into a parking bay, reverse out either to the left or right
  • reverse-park the vehicle into space behind a parked car or reverse-park into a parking bay
  • pull up on the right, then reverse back

During the test, you will also have to drive for twenty minutes without turn-by-turn directions from the examiner. Instead, you will have to follow either:

  • traffic signs
  • or a satnav

You must not record more than six-driver faults, one dangerous or one serious, to pass the test. If successful, you will now be eligible to sit the part 3 instructional ability test.

Driving faults are easy to pick up. To avoid this, have your driving assessed by an Ordit registered trainer before attempting. Reading the above outline of the part 2 driving ability test, be honest and ask yourself how confident you are in satisfying the list. Remember, you only get three attempts, so do not waste one.
